Yaya Toure calls time on international career
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has announced
his retirement from international football.
The Ivory Coast international released a statement
on his website saying, “Writing this note was probably ‘the most
difficult match of my life’. After 14 years at the highest level, I’m sure this
is the right time for me! The fact that I am 33 now, the intensity of training
and the multitude of games are not the reasons why I am making this decision.”
He scored 19 goals in 102 appearances for Ivory Coast. He represented the team at the 2006, 2010 and
2014 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
He also represented Ivory Coast in six
Africa Cup of
Nations in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013and 2015, helping them finish runner-up in 2006 and 2012,
while captaining them to victory in 2015.
