Former managing director of Jumia Nigeria, Tunde Kehinde, is about flagging off a first of-its-kind project in Nigeria. Come October 2016, The Harvard Business School graduate will float Lidya, Nigeria’s first online-only bank.

The digital bank which will be based in Nigeria’s capital, Lagos will offer small and medium-sized businesses unsecured loans of between N152,000 ($500) and N4.5 million ($15,000).
“There are no real products catered to these customers today. What we’re trying to do is introduce a lot of technology, algorithms and machine learning to industrialize the credit assessment process.” Kehinde maintained.

He also revealed plans to partner with other Nigerian banks to allow them to use it as a platform to target small businesses and offer financial services at such low cost to its customers.

“Because of how the banks are set up, with bricks and mortar networks, they’re more inclined to service multinationals and large government institutions. Their cost structure isn’t favourable to servicing small businesses. Because we’re using technology and algorithms to assess the risk, it allows them to offer financial products to these customers at a low cost.” He added.

Following the UK’s surprise vote to leave the EU,  www.ExxAfrica.com, a specialist intelligence company that delivers accurate, decision-ready, and commercially relevant forecasts on African political and economic risk to businesses, assesses the probable impact such a departure would have on African trade, investment, and security policy. Read below.

The effective implementation of a new foreign exchange mechanism and liberalisation of the fuel sector will face fresh hurdles as the UK withdraws from the EU. Nigeria will also struggle to attract interest in new debt sales aimed at financing its expansive budget.
The main impact of a ‘Brexit’ on Nigeria would be further deterioration of the country’s already struggling economy, which has been caused by the fall in global oil prices and a steep drop in local crude production due to an insurgency in the Niger Delta. There is extensive trade and security cooperation between the UK and Nigeria that would be likely to face several years of disruption as the UK departs from the EU. Nigeria is the UK’s second-largest export market in Africa. Bilateral trade between the two countries is currently worth USD8.3 billion and projected to reach USD25 billion by 2020. The UK is also Nigeria’s largest source of foreign investment, with assets worth over USD1.4 billion. Moreover, UK-Nigerian remittances account for USD21 billion a year. The UK is also one of the largest development assistance donors to Nigeria, although Nigeria is not as aid-dependent as most continental counterparts.

A slowing UK economy on the back of a departure from the EU and potential disruption as the UK renegotiates its trade agreements, would be likely to reduce trade flows, foreign direct investment, and Nigerian remittances. There is also no guarantee that other EU countries will make up the UK shortfall in trade and investment, as other EU countries look to Iran for more reliable access to oil and to Asia for cheaper labour. On 24 June, Nigerian stocks ended a three-day rally, falling 1.4% over worries of Britain’s vote to leave the EU. Nigerian banks, such as Fidelity Bank and Zenith Bank, recorded the biggest losses. Nigerian stocks had previously rallied 8.5% after the government floated the naira and ended a highly controversial currency peg.

As a result, new portfolio inflows will slow, which will hamper the implementation of the country’s new foreign exchange mechanism. On 20 June, the central bank introduced a more flexible foreign currency policy, removing a de facto peg of around 197 naira to the US dollar. The naira’s 16-month peg to the dollar had overvalued the Nigerian currency, resulted in an economic contraction, and harmed investments. The implementation of the fuel sector liberalisation, including the termination of a burdensome state-subsidy scheme, would be likely to face implementation issues. The sector’s liberalisation will add to fuel importers’ margins and will allow shipments of fuel to resume.
The liberalisation of the fuel marketing sector and the proposed introduction of a flexible exchange rate are both aimed at soothing foreign investor concerns and to attract new fundraising to finance a record budget deficit widened by a fall in oil revenues. The effective implementation of the new currency regime and establishing its credibility will be key to attracting new foreign direct investment and portfolio flows. Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun is due launch a planned eurobond sale later in 2016. The government plans to raise USD10 billion of new debt of which USD5 billion would come from foreign investors. Much of this planning would be delayed as risk averse investors steer away from Nigerian debt.

Beyond trade and investment, the UK is also a key partner in Nigerian security. The UK has been crucial to drawing international attention to the Islamist Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast. There is a risk that the UK would become distracted from international security threats, such as those by Boko Haram, as it negotiates its departure from the EU. However, the US and France have proven more crucial partners than the UK in combating Boko Haram, thus mitigating the effect on counter-insurgency efforts.

You haven’t seen anything more preposterous than this!

The world condemns in its entirety an effortlessly racist Chinese advertisement for a laundry detergent, Qiaobi. The commercial shows a Chinese actress shoving a black man in a washing machine for thorough washing and then she smiles when he comes out Asian. You can see reactions in the video.

King Togbe Ngoryifia Cephas Kosi Bansah

In this part of the world, being a mechanic is really not a dignifying. Now imagine a monarch working as one....totally unfathomable right?

Togbe Ngoryifia Cephas Kosi Bansah works as a mechanic in Gemany and at the same time is the  superior and spiritual chief of Ewe people of Gbi kingdom in Eastern Ghana.  He governs his people (about 300,000) over Skype.

The 67 year-old moved to Germany in 1970 and was advised by his grandfather to learn the mechanic trade.

Years later, His grandfather, the King of Hohoe, died and Bansah's father and eldest brother were deemed unfit to rule because they were left-handed, which the Ewe people considered to be 'unclean'. He succeeded him but continued his trade in Germany.
He resides in Ludwigshafen where  with his wife Gabriele Bansah, 57 and his two children Carlo and Katharina live. Cephas visits Ghana up to eight times per year.

Angie’s parents were in a violent relationship. Sadly, Mr. Nwandu murdered his wife and was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison in 2002. With no immediate family left to live with, Angie and her four sisters were incorporated into the Los Angeles foster care system.

Her story has permeated the nooks and crannies of Nigeria and even made international media headlines. It has evoked compassion, opened doors in least expected places, ushered her into realms of glory and brought her fame. Most of us have been itching to know her struggles before she attained the 'celebrity' status. Well, the beautiful mother of two has opened up in an interview with PUNCH newspaper. Read excerpts below.

Olajumoke’s pulsating story of dropping out of school so her younger siblings could continue their education, to hawking bread in Lagos in 2011, to starting her own hairdressing salon which later failed, to sleeping in the bakery in Lagos with her daughter and about 40 other women, to waking up at 5am everyday to pray.

Flashing a warm grin as she exchanged pleasantries with guest after guest as they made their way into the modest hotel in Yaba, an ever bubbling suburb in the heart of Nigeria’s commercial powerhouse – Lagos – last Wednesday evening, her bright complexion and lanky frame still stood her out even from the slightly dark corner where she and her 16-month-old daughter, Precious, were seated. Donning a black tank top, a pair of fitted denim jeans on top of a black plimsoll sneaker to match, you would be forgiven if you thought her smashing looks that evening was always the norm.

But shockingly, it has not always been this good for 27-year-old Jumoke Orisaguna. About one week earlier, she was hawking freshly-baked bread across the streets of Sabo, Yaba and environs in almost tattered dresses and worn-out slippers. Every day since she made the long journey from her native Ire, an agrarian community in Osun State, to Lagos with her little daughter in January 2016 in search of a new life, she had worked at least nine hours a day, many times under the ferocious and scotching afternoon sun that sweeps across the city, to earn a decent living.

The second child in a family of four children born to a poor farmer and a mother who sold vegetables to provide extra income barely enough to sustain the home, Jumoke knew the meaning of hardship even as a little girl. The loss of her elder brother, the first child of the family, meant that she had to provide direction for her three remaining siblings and also play a significant role in helping to bring food to the table. While many her age savoured the experiences of early puberty, Jumoke, by virtue of her humble background, had to grow up fast – and into an adult, too. For her, there was almost no childhood.

“While the other girls would run around to play in the stream and engage in all sorts of games, I was either selling vegetables for my mother or helping my father on his farm because it was from these two areas that our daily bread came,” the young mother of two recalls with nostalgia during a rare encounter with our correspondent earlier in the week. “The opportunity for running around like the other girls wasn’t just there,” she added.

With two wives and four children to feed, it became increasingly tough for the poor farmer to support the education of his children. As a result, Jumoke had to drop out of school after completing her primary education. Even though she knew if she must realise her childhood dream of becoming a renowned lawyer in the future she had to study further, the love for her younger siblings meant she had to sign up to a hairdressing training for them to also have a chance of becoming something big through education.

“I had to choose between me continuing my education and my other siblings sitting back at home,” the 27-year-old revealed. “It was a huge sacrifice I had to make for them to also have a chance of becoming great in life through education. I always feel sad each time I see my childhood friends who are educated and have become successful professionals today. If I had someone to sponsor me, of course I wouldn’t have ended up as a hairdresser or even ever had to hawk bread. I still nurse the pains till this moment.

“But instead of idling away at home or just selling vegetables for my mother and helping my father on his farm, I decided to learn hairdressing and make a meaning out of my life,” she said.

And for the next three years, Jumoke horned her skills in one of the best hairdressing salons in the community, hoping to hit it big by the time she would become her own boss. By 2013 she had successfully completed the rigorous training and had rented and equipped a shop with the help of family members and the little amount she had managed to save during her first stint in Lagos hawking bread in 2011 for six months. But every hope of instant success soon fizzled into frustration and utmost disappointment. The reality on ground was a distant contrast to the result she had long envisaged.

“Things became tougher after I opened the salon,” she cuts in. “You know since Ire is a town whose economic activities largely depend on the presence of the students of the Federal Polytechnic in the community, sales get very bad when they are not on campus.

“So, money wasn’t coming at such and even to feed or send our eldest daughter to school became a big problem for me and my husband. That was why I decided to come back to Lagos to give bread hawking a trial again in January this year. I felt it was the best option for now rather than just sit and idle away in Ire,” she said.

Luckily for the young woman, that decision has today turned out to be the wisest step she ever took. On the evening of February 2 while hawking her bread as usual, she crashed into something big – something that would change her life forever and write her name in gold. Celebrity photographer – TY Bello – was conducting a street shoot for Nigerian-born British singer, Tinie Tempah, on one of the streets dotting Yaba that evening when suddenly, from nowhere, Jumoke, with the heavy ‘baggage’ on her head, harmlessly sauntered into the scene. For her, it was another evening to service her many clients in the area especially at a nearby mechanic workshop where a handful of customers were already waiting for her.

“I only wanted to walk through the scene to take bread to my customers at the mechanic workshop around the place the shoot was taking place. I never had the intention of appearing in the photograph. It was while I made my way that the camera captured me,” she revealed.

It's that time of the Year I appreciate you readers. 2015 has been a superlative year and I owe it to God and your contributions. Thank you for the visits, comments (albeit few, I need barrage of comments next year. Lol ) and even words of encouragement

I also want to acknowledge my contributors; Short Story Fridays, (Oluwafunminiyi Omojola , Sueddie Agema, Ogechi Nwobia , Morountodun Olaseinde-Williams) and I culled some from Naijastories too. Sports (Adeshina Peter,) Op-eds/Articles (Femi Oladele and Abosede) and many more. May you be more enriched with wisdom and strength. And chiefly, may your ink never run dry.

To my clients, thank you for trusting this platform and putting endless smiles to my face. Thank You for choosing Loladeville.com. May God enrich your pockets and give you grace to patronise me more. Lol.

I had a setback 2 months back, my blog was hacked and I had to stay away from blogging for 2weeks. That period was the darkest in my life. Massive shout out to my Web designers, Adeolu and Syntocode who worked tirelessly to restore it. I owe you lots. Shout out to my fellow blogger friends too (Moji Delano, Helen Ozor, Kemi Filani, Ob9ja, Shawttynatt).

I noticed some of my female readers left this blog this year (yes I received your messages) there were complaints about me doing more of  football posts than entertainment. Yes I had to restrategise. We all can't be entertainment and gossip bloggers. I found a unique niche in Football and I had to stick to it. Yes I still write entertainment posts and there's going to be a balance in the new year. Oya run back.

We will be cruising into the new year in a matter of few hours. My prayers: May the New Year bring you happiness and peace, may your aspirations come through and may the winds of time allow you to soar in the direction of your beautiful dreams. Shine bright like the stars you all are. I am immensely grateful.

Adewale Adeyemo;  a 34 year-old Nigerian has been appointed US President,  Barack Obama's deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs.

Adeyemo who served in Obama’s administration since 2009 is succeeding Caroline Atkinson. He joined the White House’s National Economic Council as deputy director and was Treasury’s lead negotiator on the currency agreement that was part of the Pacific trade deal.

“For the past four years, I have relied on Caroline Atkinson, most recently as my Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics, as we’ve navigated pressing challenges to the global economy.

“As my representative at the G-7 and G-20, she played a key role in coordinating our response to international financial crises, worked with our allies to devise and implement targeted economic sanctions to advance our national security goals, played a vital role in our economic engagements with China, and helped to achieve breakthrough agreements on climate that will strengthen our economy and our security.

“I’ve relied on, and benefited from, Caroline’s knowledge and judgment and, as she concludes" A statement by Obama reads.
