According to the Nigerian Tribune, the Directorate of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that the 2014 Batch B Orientation program which would kick off between September 1st – 8th 2014 would last for 2days instead of the usual 21 days in 9 Nigerian States.
This according to the report is to prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease. States affected include Lagos, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Osun, and Yobe.
I really think Rivers should be in the list.

Senegal has become the fifth West African country to be affected by the deadly Ebola Virus Disease. The country's health minister, Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters today that an infected Guinea national 'brought' the virus to Senegal.
The carrier, a student visited an hospital in Dakar for treatment and didn't disclose that he had close contact with victims in his country. Infact, he disappeared from his country three weeks ago while under surveillance. He's been immediately placed in quarantine in Senegal.

Last week's sack of 16,000 Resident Doctors by the Federal Government is careless, unscrupulous and clearly an indefensible action. It could turn out to be a social catastrophe that will worsen a medical system in severe crisis.
As said by the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, this action can only worsen the abysmal doctor-patient ratio, which stands at 1:6,300 today, which is among the continent's worst examples of the dearth of medical manpower. It similarly highlights the ill-health of the health sector and lays bare the increasing alienation of government of the country from its subjects.
Our doctors are not all saints but they certainly are no prostitutes as some in government will like to us to believe. In which case it is better we seek to end the epidemic diseases rather than ending doctors' careers.
In this country, governments have for a long time withdrawn their responsibility for healthcare and education to the common people and have left the field open for persons seeking profits. That accounts for why Doctors have continued their strike into the second month and a façade of normalcy appears to pervade the environment.
People here stay alive because God cares. No one looks after the patients.
The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD went on strike to mainly press the government to implement agreements earlier reached. Other issues are secondary to this. It is only in this country that government will consciously enter into agreement with labour unions without the intention to implement them.
They just walk away from doing its part without any qualms. This had been the bone of contention between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. A government so bereft of credibility could only convince the university teachers to go back to classrooms after the Central Bank published a statement indicating that money expected as part of the agreement was on account.
The Nigerian health structure has grown largely in spite of the government. Successive administrations have failed to catch up with the growing needs of rapid population growth, modernization, research and the changes in medical science. Governments get away with doing little or nothing because we have a two-tiered system that permits for-profit hospitals existing side-by-side with public facilities.
Given this situation, the private hospitals have offered succor to families who can afford to pay their often exorbitant charges. The well-off get treated with top-notch medical practices and medicines and the poor Nigerians gets far less or no care at all. Some government hospitals are no more than a place to die under a roof.
When you talk to them, there are many of our countrymen who are afraid to go before doctors and hospitals and they double-up abroad at the slightest sign of sickness. I am told that between a half and two-thirds aboard every Egypt Air Flight out of Kano, five times a week is made up of medical tourists trooping to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India for treatment.
But the private sector cannot provide affordable healthcare neither can it fulfill the needs of the population from their government. That is why they have the NHIS in the UK and Medicare in the United States.
While governments continue to fail in both the provision of adequate healthcare and a competent regulatory regime over the blossoming for-profit healthcare system, overall deterioration of the system has come to a point where many of the so-called private healthcare facilities have become no more than medical and diagnostic shops.
Without a government policy to audit their services, private hospitals are known to prescribe unnecessary investigations, procedures and medicines. Making profits is not a bad thing by itself. No business can exist if it is not profit-making. The problem as we have here is that this is not governed by ethics and morality.
In the United States, six hospitals have so far this year been fined millions of Dollars for conspiring with diagnostic centres and recommending needless procedures. These include Kentucky Hospital, fined 41Million Dollars for prescribing an unnecessary procedure.
Since our governments are unprepared to rise to the challenges of providing modern and competent healthcare services to the ordinary citizens, the least they owe to us is to wake up to their duty of surveillance, enforcement and regulation so as to save us costs and life as well. They must throw a spotlight over this dark side of the country's healthcare segment.
To do this, a good starting point is to call back the sacked doctors, sit down with them and listen to their grievances. There is nothing to gain from the sack of thousands of doctors. This country is still to recover from the exodus of doctors following the proscription of the NMA and NARD by the military regime in 1985.
Treated with decency and respect, our doctors are reasonable and would act with reason and patriotism especially in view of Ebola and other epidemics such as cholera that are making new in-roads.
Our doctors are not all saints but they certainly are no prostitutes as some in government will like to us to believe. In which case it is better we seek to end the epidemic diseases rather than ending doctors' careers.

I know we are all trying as much as possible to protect ourselves from contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease but easy does it. Going as far as hurting people physically might land us into more trouble.
A young lady identified as Bunmi reportedly picked up a bottle and broke it on the head of a young man named Demola Ojikutu for hugging her from behind without her consent. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.
The incident happened around Ajah area of Lagos State yesterday.
Bunmi's sister, Yemi who narrated the story said her sister had refused to shake anyone since she learnt of the EVD.
"We were discussing at Ilaje area when Ojikutu held her from behind. Bunmi was enraged and, out of anger, picked a bottle from a nearby beer parlour and smashed it on his head. Yes, I am not happy about what my sister did but the man was also wrong to have held her from behind, after all she is not his
lover." Yemi added.

I know you already have your reservations against my caption, but you might want to keep them under bucket until you get to the end of this article, just follow closely and let's review this together. Towards the end of last month a deadly and very contagious disease EVD (EBOLA virus disease) was said to have resurfaced after some patients started showing the symptoms' again. The deadly disease known to have started way back as at the 70's has found its way amongst humans again and this time more effectively.
The substantiation of all the stories there about this disease is barely my business, but how the government of Nigeria, known to take advantage of any situation, especially negative, for their political and selfish gains, may have gotten into this global pandemonium to sieve out the gold that might be imbedded in the outbreak of this disease.
Nigerians are known to deal with situation of the moment and have a tendency of forgetting previous national events if introduced to new ones. As far as I'm concerned, facts and figures might be right about the swift spread of EVD but not even a blind man is ignorant of the Political devices thoroughly aimed at the masses the government is suppose to serve just to create an unsettled atmosphere perfect for them to strike their strategies.Just recently, the tag #Bring back our girls became popular because of our lack of focus as a people and a nation, we've lost focal point of "that" national event and has moved forward into #Ebola, irrespective of how the story of the over 200 Chibok girls ends. Now grants and supports are being given from health organizations around the world to contain this dreadful disease and the good news is Nigerian government received a large sum of the support given except that they've used it to build under average facilities and spread unnecessary panic.
I like the fact that everyone should wash their hands and do more healthy exercises. It is good, I mean people should be clean but In my candid opinion, the government has found a ground to shift our focus off the Chibok girls that are somewhere within the country, hopefully, living under torment and forced doctrines of their abductors. Guess what, this Ebola is strong enough to scare the whole world but won't stop the campaign exercise(s) of our political leaders who are almost not concerned. As a matter of fact, the number of fliers and publicity given to the masses concerning Ebola is not close to the publicity they've given to political aspirants for the election that is still a year away.
Secondly, the government is proposing to stop gatherings where this contagious disease can find an opportunity. Churches, schools etc are being advised to stop meeting to contain Ebola, but there is no gathering as much as the kind of crowd we have during campaigns, if the government is serious about containing this disease, the first measure is to stop campaigns that have the highest plausibility of spreading Ebola.
The government will not be moved by this observation, but as a nation, we have a choice not to move in the direction this government known for treating situations trivialy and milking out all there is available to fill their pockets and gain more power. We have an option to still help the Chibok girls raise a voice of freedom and help their families smile again.
Not a sentence in this article have I mentioned that Ebola is not real and have I opposed the facts, but this disease in the hands of Nigerian government is just another opportunity to break higher political grounds and shift our attention away from the problems we were dealing with before the outbreak of EBOLA. Spread the news, make some noise about this, we refuse to be gullible again, because what will eventually happen is, this Ebola disease will be contained, maybe or maybe not, but the government won't stop to oppress us with their selfish agendas. My advice "FOCUS"
PEOPLE OF NIGERIA.

Still on the many woes Patrick Sawyer brought to Nigeria. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Nigeria and other West African countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease from participating in some sports at the Youth Olympics. Apparently, the decision was made to ensure the safety of participants.
A statement released by the IOC reads, " Athletes from affected areas will not compete in combat sports" and "it was also decided that no athletes from the region would compete in the pool. We regret that due to this issue some young athletes may have suffered twice, both from the anguish caused by the outbreak in their home countries and by not being able to compete in the Youth Olympic Games."
"We have been reassured by the health authorities that there have been no suspected cases and that the risk of infection is extremely unlikely. Together we have developed a policy which balances the health needs of all, with respect for the rights of the young athletes from the region."
The Youth Olympic Games which will be held in Nanjing, China's former capital, from August 16 to 28 will feature more than 3,500 competitors aged 15 to 18. A total of 25 people have fallen into the categories of Ebola-hit countries; (Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria.) Nigeria's squad is the largest with 13 members.

Former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has described the late Liberian-American who "brought" the Ebola Virus Disease to Nigeria as an evil man whose mission was to kill as many people as possible. He also revealed that he was sponsored by some rich, powerful and well-connected people. Below is what he wrote on his official Facebook page.
"I disagree with those who have described Patrick Sawyer as a madman. He was not mad at all but just evil. He was a man that was on a mission. That mission was to spread the ebola virus to Nigeria and to infect and kill as many people as possible with it. He was an evil man with an evil intention and purpose. Worst still he was not working alone. Some people, and I mean rich, powerful and well-connected people, were working with him. As a matter of fact they sent him on the mission.
They cultivated him, took care of him, paid him, brainwashed him, gave him all that he wanted in life and finally asked him to go on a suicide mission to destroy the lives of others and spread the deadly disease.
This was a clear case of bio-terrorism and Sawyer was simply a pawn in a bigger game and a wider picture. The motive of those who sent him was to spread fear and panic, to kill as many people as possible, to create a need for a solution to the problem, to prepare the ground for a new wonder drug that could cure ebola, to create a massive market for that drug and to ensure that there would be massive profits from it's sale.
As usual it is the unbelieving, unprepared, undiscerning and naive Africans that have been used as the prime guinea pigs. When will they stop destroying us and treating us with such contempt? When will they begin to see and treat us as human beings?"

The fear of Ebola! No one wants to take chances. First lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan who touched down Gdansk Walesa International Airport in Poland on Wednesday 13th August 2014 was pictured adopting the new method of greeting while exchanging pleasantries with officials and aides.
Rather than offer her hands for handshakes, Dame who was invited to the country to commission a training ship built for the Nigerian Oceanographic Institute simply smiled and rubbed her palms before each guest.

Zmapp, the experimental Ebola drug, for treatment of patients infected with the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been approved by the National Health Research Ethics Committee, Nigeria.
In a statement issued to newsmen by Prof. Clement Adebamowo, Chairman of the committee on Wednesday in Abuja, the decision by the committee is coming on the heels of Tuesday's approval by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the use of Zmapp for treatment of Ebola patients.
"It is ethical to use these treatments in the current situation without first submitting an application to National, State or Institutional Health Research Ethics Committee for prior review and approval. In addition, the Committee waives the current requirement that international shipment of any biological samples out of Nigeria should be preceded by the establishment of a Materials Transfer Agreement.
"This waiver is to promote rapid international response to this global emergency,'' the statement said.
In the statement, the Nigerian National Code for Health Research Ethics emphasised that all innovative and non-validated treatments should be carefully and adequately documented.
According to the statement, the documentation can form the basis for clinical trials of the efficacy and side effects of the treatment according to established scientific principles.
In the statement, the ethics committee enjoined all agencies, development partners and research scientists to follow the guideline for the rapid resolution of the current emergency.
"The guideline will contribute to preparedness in case of future occurrences and contribution to scientific knowledge.
"It must be noted that all Phase O and Phase I Clinical Trials that may subsequently be designed for treatment of this infection can be approved only by the National Health Research Ethics Committee,'' it said.

Following reported cases of Ebola virus in Nigeria, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has expressed concerns regarding their AFCON clash with the Eagles in Calabar on September 6, 2014.
Vincent Nzamwita, FERWAFA president wrote the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on the situation in Nigeria.
"We're waiting to see if they can change the game, it's a big worry. If the government decide that the Amavubi does not travel, then we shall respect that," he added.
Meanwhile, CAF will be moving Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers from countries most affected by the EVD. According to them, World Health Organization have advised them to avoid huge gatherings that could facilitate the spread of the Ebola virus.
A circular, sent to all 54 CAF affiliated national associations reads:
"CAF will maintain its schedule of matches on the entire continent, except for 3 countries: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, which have recorded a great number of cases. CAF has decided to ask the three federations to relocate to a neutral country the matches of their teams participating in CAF competitions, for a period up to mid-September 2014."
"Each National Association receiving delegations is obliged to communicate all the necessary information delivered by health authorities to ensure the reception of teams and officials from various countries, including those from affected countries, and to proceed, if necessary, to additional checks at arrival points if required."
