Court charges have been opened against Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o after a Spanish public prosecutor accused him of conspiring to evade €3.5m in taxes owed on income from his image rights when he played in Barcelona between 2006-2009.

The three-time African footballer of the year who presently plays for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, is accused of four tax offences, each punishable with up to five years in prison and a fine of €21m.

The Prosecutor stated that the former Barcelona player allegedly created companies in Hungary and Spain, and used them to channel income obtained from ceding his image rights to Barca and Puma; deduct personal expenses, such as payments for his mortgages, furniture and expenses related to his luxury.

Eto'o and his club are yet to respond to the allegations.
