The new HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS) has launched the Leaving No Nigerian Behind (LeNNiB) campaign.

According to the Group, "As you are aware, there is a global sense of urgency to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. Leading to this is the need to reach the 90-90-90 target by 2020.
One of the slogans is ensure that no one is left behind in the HIV response. However we community advocates are deeply concerned that Nigeria may be left behind the drive to end the global HIV epidemic. We as community members therefore, out of a deep sense of responsibility to ourselves, identify the strong need to push for all stakeholders to be accountability for the progress we make toward the 2020 and 2030 global targets.

Currently, we have about 3.4 million people living with HIV infection, 210,000 new infections annually, less than 10 million people taking a HIV test annually, only 30% PMTCT coverage, and less than 30% treatment coverage. There is also a decline in condom use, an increase in the number of adolescents with HIV infections including those newly infected with HIV as adolescents due to high sexual risk behaviour for HIV infection, and a whole lot more.

Yet Nigeria is one of the largest recipient of donor funds for its HIV response programmes.

The new HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS) shall be leading the Leaving No Nigerian Behind (LeNNiB) campaign leading up to 2020 and 2030. We shall work with partners nationally, regionally and internationally to demand that all respective actors in the HIV field, including we community actors as well, become more accountable to the HIV response. As a community, we shall develop an advocacy campaign making it very clear what our demands. These will clearly focus on targets jointly defined by stakeholders on what we want to do and how we plan to reach the 2020 and 2030 goals. We shall be holding stakeholders accountable for impacts in the both the HIV prevention and treatment landscape.

We are grateful for the little steps but we demand more.

Nigeria-Olympic-Committee-NOC

Ahead of the Olympic Games which will hold from August 5 to 21 at the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The Nigeria Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Commission have released guidelines on  Zika virus prevention for Nigerians who are attending the sporting event. Pregnant women have been advised not to travel to Brazil, while athletes, officials and other Nigerians in the country for the games should prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent and protective clothing.
• After the Games, all travellers should practice safer sex, including the correct and consistent use of condoms, or abstain from sex for at least eight weeks after their return;
• Men who experience symptoms of Zika virus disease during or after their return, should adopt safer sex practices or abstain from sex for at least six months;
• Pregnant women whose sexual partners travelled to Brazil should practice safer sex practices or abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy. Couples or women planning a pregnancy should wait at least eight weeks after return from Brazil before trying to conceive; and 6 months if the male partner was symptomatic;
• All travellers should use personal protective measures such as insect repellent for at least three weeks after returning from the Games to avoid being bitten and potentially spreading the infection to other people through mosquito bites; and,
• Travellers should not donate blood for at least four weeks after departure from Brazil to reduce the potential risk of onwards transmission.

Nigerians should also “be up to date with all the common childhood vaccinations before visiting Brazil (you may even need a booster). This includes immunizations for Tetanus and Diphtheria, Whooping cough (Pertussis), Hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
Brazil is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as endemic for Yellow Fever. A Yellow Fever vaccination is compulsory.” It added that the full two-dose Hepatitis A vaccine is strongly recommended when visiting Brazil and other precautions for hygiene and food safety should be taken.

Ex- Miss Nigeria, Nike Oshinowo has spoken about her struggle with Endometriosis; a disease in which tissue that normally grows inside the uterus grows outside it. The main symptoms like pelvic pain and infertility). Addressing the health challenge at the recent Gala Night of Fun and Fund Raising for Endometriosis put together by the Endometriosis Support Group of Nigeria, the 50-year-who welcomed twins; a boy and a girl two years ago through a gestational surrogate in the US said she was diagnosed with the disease in her early teens.

"I have lived with endometriosis since the age of 13. I was sent to boarding school in England. It was during the first few days in secondary school that I began my (menstrual) periods. They called the ambulance and I was hospitalized for 10 days because the pain started and wouldn’t stop. I thought I was going to die, the first two days I was in the infirmary. I’m telling the story because it happened in England and, supposedly, the white people, who knew best, yet had no idea what was wrong with me.

Every female student they had dealt with, had a normal period and coped with it, so they could not understand why I was dramatizing. They thought I just wanted attention. The pain was so intense I passed out. The challenge was now to get me to stop bleeding.

Living with endometriosis is a challenge. When you see your doctor, your doctor just tries to treat the symptoms and assumes the pain resolves around your menstrual cycle. But this is not so. The pain affects every single aspect of your life.

I have never had an examination without my period, I have never traveled without my period. There are so many things I have never done without my period. When I’m very happy, my period comes, When I’m depressed, my period is there. I learned just to cope with it. I love the quote that women wear their pain like stilettos. That’s what I have been doing.

Until I turned 40, Nigerians didn’t know I suffered from endometriosis. I granted an interview and Nigerians understood why I never drank alcohol. You cannot be on medication and take alcohol. It was finally understood why I was so clean cut and into healthy living.

The first time I experienced the pain of endometriosis was very traumatic. I thought I was going to die. Really, I have lost count of the number of surgeries that I have had but I sure know that it’s more that 17 times."

Durojaiye Bola, a promising little boy has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Durojaiye's family was without the means to support the expense of his treatment and medication. He was on The Nigeria Diabetes online community list for support, next in line to Omolade who, thanks to a partner NGO called Priceless Jewel, will now have support with her insulin and university education from a kind philanthropist.

Last Friday Nigerian Diabetes Online Community  found him in the hospital with burn scars on all of his limbs.
Apparently Durojaiye had fallen into a diabetes-related coma at a religious center. In a bid to bring him back to life, his digits were burnt badly in fire by the religious members. This shock reminds us of the huge importance of educating religious leaders on diabetes.

Right now Durojaiye has been referred to a plastic surgeon in a bigger hospital with the possibility of amputation.
With tears on their eyes his parents said categorically that they cannot afford it.
They said that sending him to another hosptial will be like a death sentence.

A team was set up by the NGdoc with initial finances for his emergency medical costs being given by the association. The team also has support from T1International.

Our aim is to ensure:

Optimal care for Durojaiye, including psychotherapy and rehabilitation
Financial support to cater for a substantial part of his bills.
A strategy to prevent such occurrences from happening again.
An advocacy plan to ensure liable children with diabetes have access to insulin and other essential consumables.
Here's a clarion call to well meaning Nigerians to support this young and promising child living with diabetes.

Here's a link to his fundpage

Zika image web.jpg

The first sexually-transmitted Zika virus case has been confirmed in Texas by The US government’s Centres for Disease Control (CDC). The patient contracted it from a partner who travelled to an area affected by Zika ,Venezuela to be precise.
This is coming several hours after The World Health Organisation declared Zika a global health emergency due to its spread around the Americas.

About Zika Virus

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil. The outbreak in Brazil led to reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.

A pack of professional fraudsters parading as medical doctors is on the prowl in all states of the country. A trained medical Doctor, Femi Ajose just shared his recent encounter with a quack one and has implored Nigerians to seek medical help in appropriate quarters. Read his account below.

Yesterday Morning, I parked my car at one of the popular car parks in Marina.  And I was about going out of the park, I sighted a man with a 'modern' sphygmomanometer checking the 'supposed ' Blood pressure ' of one of the men working at the park. I have heard of such acts severally, so I moved closer to them pretending I wanted to have mine checked too.

The machine brought out the BP of the man : 170/ 100mmhg. The 'street Doctor ' snapped and said to his patient " Oga wahala dey o"
I quickly asked, "wetin happen?" He said the Blood sugar is too high and the one in the brain too. The one in the blood is 170 and the one in the brain is 100.
The poor patient was SCARED already!
Then bargain to sell drugs started.
Well, I had to come in.

I showed my ID card to the man. And told him if I wasn't in a haste I would have handed him over to the police and ensure he's charged/sued for MURDER and will end in Jail.

I helped him. I educated him.
Let's be careful!
You remember how people bathed with salt water, even some drank salty water during the Ebola period. Some even died as a result of ingestion of excess salt.
Don't listen to these people.

I've watched in bewilderment how some supposedly educated folks succumb to the charlatanic tendencies of the médiocres parading themselves as trained Doctors when most of them didn't even finish secondary school.

If you have any questions, pls ask your Doctor.

Visit an hospital, please.
I hope this gets to the appropriate quarters and hoping they'll help bring a lasting solution to the menace.
God Bless Nigeria.

New Case of Ebola Confirmed in Sierra Leone

Less than 24 hours after the World Health Organization declared West Africa Ebola-free, a new case has been confirmed in Sierra Leone. Series of tests were carried out on a patient who died in the north of the country this week and they all confirmed that it was caused by Ebola.  The patient, a 22 year-old lady contracted the virus last week Thursday and died on Tuesday.
"We can confirm the Ebola case in Sierra leone" WHO said in a statement.
Langoba Kelly of Sierra Leone's office of national security told reporters in Freetown,"The swab test on the victim after her death was done three times and all proved positive.
"Our level of preparedness remains high as we did not stand down or dismantle any of the structures that we had used to fight the virus before."

The prayer of every mother is to train her child and in turn the child trains her when she's old. That was not to be my case as I watched my little Chineye who had just graduated a month ago dies in my arms owing to the negligence and wickedness of the Indian doctors of Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, India. Chineye had just graduated from University of Abuja and was preparing for her NYSC but the family had decided that rather than just sit at home before her NYSC call-up, its best she corrects her right limb which was severely shortened after a fall in 2001.
Following the fall in which she broke her femur (thigh bone) she had a surgery which involved the insertation of k-nail (iron) to support the bone. The iron eventually broke into two and a surgery was necessitated to remove the 2 piece of broken iron and correct the short limb that was causing her a lot of pains. . Little did I know that the Indian doctors had planned to kill my dear Chineye or how else should I put it?

After the surgery in India, Chineye was upset, when I asked her why, she raised her fears over the surgery, Dr Gupta the senior consultant removed only one piece of the 2 pieces of previously broken iron in her limb as opposed to the earlier agreement that the two pieces will be removed before conducting the limb lengthening surgery.

When she complained, he assured her that everything will be fine. Shortly after she was discharged, she noticed that the lengthening screw was stiff and complained immediately to the doctors but they informed her that they were looking for the right size of iron for her height.

After 3 days she was forced to go to the hospital. She walked to the dressing room and two other doctors began to attend to her because Dr Gupta was not in the hospital. While they were changing the screw she gasped and suddenly lost consciousness on the dressing table; the doctors wheeled her into the emergency room.

Less than an hour after she was wheeled into the dressing room, I was informed that my daughter was dead, I was shocked, I could not believe my ears,I felt the world had come to an end, even in my state of shock the best, the hospital could do was to demand for an additional payment from me as cost of trying to revive Chineye.

When I walked into the room where she laid, I discovered they had already stuffed near nostrils with cotton wool while her body was still very warm, I immediately begged and cried helplessly that they should try to revive her but they heartlessly told me that there was nothing they could do that she had died and had planned to convey her to the mortuary at the time. Due to my insistence the transport to the hospital was delayed by another two hours during which they blatantly refused to administer any more procedure to revive her.

Dr Gupta latter arrived and told me she died of severe heart attack. Signs of negligence are evident in the preparedness of the surgery, as the first day she was wheeled into the theatre for the surgery it was cancelled and rescheduled because the iron was not the right size for her height even though she has done several physical consultations with Dr Gupta.

Secondly, a review of her medical records reveals that there was no blood thinning medication was prescribed which is necessary for this kind of surgery.

Thirdly, even after the surgery the doctors were still looking for the right size of iron. Fourthly, only one piece of the previously broken iron was removed. Finally, there was no willingness to revive her and they did not show any value for life in the urgency and recklessness with which they declared her dead and hurried her to the mortuary. Since her death Fortis Hospital New Delhi has issued several conflicting statements on the cause of her death which only confirms my fears that Chineye was murdered.

They have refused to release the autopsy result and they still claim to be investigating the cause of death. I have been crying since the 9th of October, 2015.

My heart bleeds and I know Chineye’s soul seeks for justice. I speak as a mother who deserves to know the cause of her daughter's death. I need the support of every Nigerian in this fight against this murderous act, injustice, oppression and wickedness.

I am helpless but I believe that with God on my side and with the support of Nigerians and the international community by sharing this story until it gets to the relevant authorities, the killers of my daughter will not escape judgement. I have spoken to a couple of Nigerians that have also had unpalatable experiences in their search for medical aid in India.

Many have lost their loved ones and refused to share their story. I have decided to share this story to save more potential lives that will be lost due to medical negligence in Fortis Hospital and create awareness.

Fortis currently has a branch in Abuja, Nigeria. Fortis why did you kill Chineye?

2 months after Liberia was declared free of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) the fatal illness has reared it's ugly head back to the West African country.

The victim, a 15 year-old fell sick on November 14 and was admitted to hospital three days later in Monrovia. He however died yesterday. Unfortunately his parents have also tested positive to the virus. 150 people who had been in contact with the family are now being monitored.

Carissa Guild, of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said the recent development may be caused by complacency among health workers.

"There were no cases for a while and Liberia was nearing the end of a 90-day period of heightened surveillance ... It is quite possible that people were tired and got complacent," Guild stated.

Liberia has recorded 10,600 cases and 4,800 deaths since the outbreak.

The Nigeria Medical Association Committee on Girl Child Education has revealed that more than
50, 000 Nigerian girl-children die annually of complications arising from poorly done abortions.

National President of the Committee, Chidi Esike while speaking during an awareness campaign organized by the Committee at Model Girls' Secondary School, Ugwuachara, Ebonyi State, said most of these young girls lack sex education and are thus influenced by their peers to engage in sexual activities.

He however implored the female students to focus on their studies and avoid distractions that often lead them to have sex before they are mature.

"The theme of this particular project is Adolescence and the Education of the Girl Child-Negotiating the Mine Field. We decided to interact with the students to create awareness of the major challenges facing them in their education through lectures and help them find best solutions that will make their education most effective," Dr. Esike said.

Chinyere Chukwuma, the wife of the late ‎radio personality, Charles Bruce Chukwuma popularly known as Chaz B has written a piece on how negligence on the part of doctors at St Nicholas Hospital, Lagos killed her husband. The  OAP died in the early hours of Saturday, November 22, 2014 of kidney failure. Find her report below.

******************
"My husband called me at about 6:40 AM, Friday the 21st of November 2014, from work. He asked me to come and pick him up because he was not feeling too good. I left with the driver to get him. When I got there, he was in obvious discomfort and he asked me to take him home. On our way home, I noticed that he was in severe pain, so I asked the driver to reverse the car and head instead to the hospital (St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos). On reaching there, we met Judith, the receptionist. I asked if there was a doctor around.

This was around 7 PM. She said yes and after some time we were asked to go into Room 2. Right there we met a young doctor called Dr. Ogidigben Kevwe.  He asked a few questions that I answered while my husband was wallowing in pains. He (Dr. Kevwe) opened an emergency file because according to him, my husband's file was locked up in Dr. Bamgboye's office, and no one had access to that office. I told Dr. Kevwe that my husband had incisional hernia surgery done a few months back – August to be precise – at the same hospital, and it was performed by one Dr. Mohan an Indian man, and Dr. Balogun at St. Nicholas Hospital.

He started to examine him. He then left us in his office and said he was coming back. He came back after some minutes and said he was unable to reach Dr. Balogun from the reception, so I dialed Dr. Balogun with my husband's phone and I and got through. At this point, I gave the phone to Dr. Kevwe, and he began explaining what he thought the problem was to Dr. Balogun. Dr. Balogun asked if my husband was in pains, and Dr. Kevwe said yes. Dr. Kevwe told Dr. Balogun that he suspected intestinal obstruction. Dr. Balogun asked if there was any swelling around where the incision was done, and Dr. Kevwe said no. He then asked if there was any reddish sign around the same area, and Dr. Kevwe said no.

Dr. Kevwe suggested giving him antibiotics, but Dr. Balogun said that they had to be careful what they gave him, since he was a post kidney transplant patient. Dr. Balogun instructed them to give him a particular injection twice to ease the pains, and he said that they should observe him till the next morning. So I left to go get him what he had asked for (his tea and his stockings). On my way home around Bonny Camp, I got a call from a strange number and when I answered, it was Dr. Kevwe.

He asked me to turn back to come pick my husband up, and I asked why. He (Dr. Kevwe) said that my Husband was feeling much better, and wants to go home. I asked the driver to reverse and head back to the hospital. On getting there, I went in and asked the Dr. again why he wants me to take him home. He repeated once again that he feels much better and I asked Dr. Kevwe if he was asking me to take him home because he thought he felt better or because the hospital did not have a bed for him.

I asked this because the nurse had mentioned earlier that she needed to check for bed space. Dr. Kevwe at this point told me that my husband would be fine and he asked me to take him home and bring him the following morning. Meanwhile, before then, Dr. Kewe wrote a prescription of drugs for my husband which I took to the pharmacist and when the lady there saw it, she asked which doctor I saw. I told her that it was Dr. Kevwe.  She moved over to the other side and called the doctor's office.  They both argued about the drug that he wrote, and then she gave me just one tablet of Exforge.

When my husband got up from the hospital bed, he staggered and I held him and asked if he was fine. The doctor said that it was the injection that was given to him and he would be fine. So I took him home. Just about 15minutes after we got home, my husband said he felt like throwing up. I brought a bowl to him and he vomited, after which he felt a bit better. He slept for some time and then got up in excruciating pain. Immediately I jumped into my clothes and then called Dr. Balogun, to say that we are on our way back to the hospital.

He said no problem, that a doctor will be waiting for me. I asked him which doctor and he said the doctor is their senior surgeon by the name Dr. Fadiran. Dr. Balogun said that Dr. Fadiran was the doctor on call. We got to the hospital in less than 20 minutes and my husband came down from the car himself. He walked into the hospital by himself before he was wheeled into the ER. Then came Dr. Kevwe, and I asked him about the senior surgeon. He told me that he would be coming very soon. I wasn't too happy with that, as I had mentioned to Dr. Balogun that my husband was in serious pains. I expected to see a consultant like he said. Dr. Kevwe attempted to place him on an IV drip and this took forever, as he was unable to successfully find a vein while my husband languished in pain. My husband kept telling them (Dr. Kevwe and the nurse) that he wants to throw up or use the restroom, and he would be fine. He kept saying that if he throws up he will be fine.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kevwe was taking instructions on the phone from Dr. Fadiran. This was when I asked when the Dr. would come. I kept asking, "when will the doctor come?"  And Dr. Kevwe said Dr. Fadiran asked him to get my entire husband's information. Dr. Kevwe told me that they are waiting for the Radiologist and the Anesthesiologist, and none of these people showed up. My husband kept on saying that he wants to throw up. But then, Dr. Kevwe asked the nurse to give him an injection, I asked what the injection was for? And he said it will stop him from vomiting.

He became so uncomfortable and was losing his breath.  They put him on oxygen, but I guess he was already choking. Meanwhile, Kevwe was still taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone.  At this time, he started gasping for air.  Meanwhile, before then, another doctor showed up. I don't know his name, but he's average in height and dark complexioned. He inserted a suction tube into his mouth, but I guess he was two hours or more late with that.

Because if that was done when I brought him to the hospital that morning, he would have been here with me today. If Dr. Fadiran were at the hospital, even after he was told that it was an emergency; my husband would have been here with me. If the anesthesiologist was at the hospital, he probably would have been here with me. If the radiologist were around on that morning to at least see what was happening inside of him, he probably would have been here with me. If Dr. Kevwe knew exactly what he was doing that morning without taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone, with an emergency case right in front of him, my husband would have been here. My husband died of total negligence on the part of St. Nicholas Hospital, and I know it.

As I mentioned earlier, the  doctor was 2 hours plus late with the suction, because, at this time, the nurse was already calling my husband's name, shouting "Mr. Charles, Mr. Charles!" He was given four adrenaline injections. The drip wasn't going at all, all this while lest I forget. I watched my husband struggled to breath. I watched him fight for his life, and I was right there when he died. Even though they were busy with CPR,  I knew when he passed on because immediately he stopped struggling, fluid started gushing out of his mouth and nose. I knew that was it. That was the same fluid that was choking him.

If there were a senior consultant or surgeon at the hospital as at when I brought him, he probably, would have been helped. In between all this, Dr. Kevwe at a time said to Dr. Fadiran on the phone that he should come now as the patient is in a critical condition. He said to the same Dr. Fadiran that 11 O'clock might be too late. I brought my husband at about 6 AM to St. Nicholas Hospital and he died at about 9.30AM without receiving prompt and adequate care. Human life cannot continue to be lost so cheaply in Nigerian hospitals. People must be made to account for their actions as professionals, hence I have contacted my Lawyers to investigate the cause of death. He has died with our dreams, visions, aspirations, and planned future together.

A US-based Nigerian psychiatrist Doctor, Caroline Ekong has been found dead in her Hockessin home. Her death was allegedly  orchestrated by her former patient,  Christopher Frisk, as a matter of fact, he called in to claim responsibility 30 minutes after her body was found by her daughter.

A graduate of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, the 55 year-old worked as an attending psychiatrist at the Rockford Center, a private psychiatric facility in Delaware. Investigators said he plotted her death for at least a year before stabbing her severally in her home last week Wednesday.‎

The 21 year-old suspect in Google review of a local mental health facility on Nov. 22, 2014 mentioned being "imprisoned" against his will at the facility by Ekong. "The person who imprisoned me was Caroline Ekong, whose ego is so large that she would never be able to admit doing something wrong," He wrote. Documents in his parents home also revealed he was "obsessed" with the medical practitioner.

Dr Caroline got married September 2014 and is survived by a daughter and son, mother and her husband, John Etim. She was described by a social worker Chris Park whom she worked with for 4 years as a mentor.‎

Caroline Ekong on her wedding day last year
"She was very professional and dedicated to her work. She commanded excellence from her treatment team. She was direct, but respectful of people's self-determination, independence and experience." Chris added.

Charles before the incident
Charles I have never met, but his beautiful wife had for the last one year been a source of support and inspiration to me as I meandered around a thankless job. So when he asked for a meeting I quickly agreed not realizing the impact this meeting would be having in my life. As I sat at the swimming pool lounge of the Ikoyi club surprisingly on the same chair Joan had interviewed me for the forgotten job, I could not help but wonder just how sweet life was. Children jumping in and out of the pool, the mothers refusing to swim for fear of exposing flabby bodies that had been destroyed by childbirth and middle age and the men watching a lackluster Nigerian Soccer Match in which in my own estimation Sunday Oliseh showed us very clearly the misery ahead for us. This was life...if only I knew what was contained in the laptop Charles was bringing towards me.

With all the protocols over, he went straight into the reason for this meeting. He opened his Laptop and with the press of the button, he destroyed my appetite. Threw me into the darkest pits of despair and forcefully bringing out tears from my eyes. What I saw was unimaginable horror, a compilation of hiroshimaic pictures of wondrous monstrosity. This could not be the same person sitting beside me.. I shifted away less he still had the contagious germs still lurking around his fine face. With hands covering my mouth and a continuous fight to stop the imminent evacuation of my bowels, I jumped and ran to the nearest toilet where on my knees I threw up and cried like I had just lost my father all over again. What was this? How can? Was this from the Ebola ravaged fields of Liberia? Was this the devil reincarnated and come at me In Ikoyi club to take revenge for all my amorous sins?  I cried and pleaded for help, God please help me, help your son, who is this Charles, had he come to kill me???

Charles while he was admitted after using the drug

No, this was an innocent Charles who for the cost of N1,300 brought this upon himself. He calmly told me his story. He had been posted to Burkina Faso by UBA and in his usual meticulous self visited a Cardiologist for a routine check. They found out that his urea level was high and the drug Zyloric was prescribed. He dutifully took the drugs and in less than 36 hours his life was turned into a living hell. He transformed into a monster no Hollywood Horror movie could match in all their creative imaginations. He turned the sights of the Ebola Victims into a mere picture drawn by nursery school children. His life ended. Blisters, skin peeling, eyes destroyed, bleeding from everywhere, bed sores and everything imaginable became his plight.

Joan flew in, saw her husband and melted. His children came in and ran away. Mirrors where kept away from him. For less than N2,000 he had bought the dreaded Stephen Johnson Syndrome. A sickness with a massively efficient mortality rate. His world came crashing and there was nothing anybody could do, fate and a wicked multi national drug company had prescribed this on his soul.

He was eventually evacuated to the UK with the private efforts of Joan and his family and there he received succor but with lasting side effects. He has had two cornea replacement surgeries and much more devastating is the fact that he cannot shed a tear for the rest of his natural life. He has been confined to the use of artificial tear inducing drugs which he buys from America at the cost of $200 monthly. His sex life, he didn't say, but if I guess, would be very far from what I am sure would have been the case and in the process lost his lucrative job with life just floating by.

GSK that huge Drug Firm, is the purveyor of this 'wonder' drug. GSK I hear manufactures and sells this drug from their UK base and distributes it all over the world while using its Nigerian Office as the headquarters for this operation of death in the whole of west Africa. Charles is in court with them. He has won the first round but as expected, the merchants of death have appealed and the hearing his coming up this February. I will be in that court premises, with my placard cursing and abusing their mothers and wishing death to their children and grandchildren.

Charles sensing my discomfort, challenged me to enter any chemist in Lagos and ask for that drug and I will get it. I took up the challenge and went into Obalende and viola I saw the drug for N900. I screamed and ran away. Where is NAFDAC in all these? Where are the authorities? Why are our doctors and Pharmacists still prescribing this drug. My people the instructions on the drug is written in FRENCH. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! french, how will we read and know the side effects. In the UK it is clearly stated in the pack that this could lead to death, but in Nigeria because we are a mumu people we keep ingesting and dying and attributing the painful death to curses from our ancestors or witches.

Charles battle is my battle, Charles cry for retribution should be our collective war cry. GSK cannot use all the legalese in this world to escape reparations. Charles and all the other victims must be compensated. The compensation will not bring back the tears in his eyes but at least it will give him a sense of justice and judgement in his favour would save other lives. That is his major worry.

As I left him that night, my mind goes back to the Amazon he married. Where would he be today without her, where would the world be today if he had died. We would not have known the evil that is GSK and their wonder drug. We await the Appeal Court Judgement even as we plot the next step in this comedy of errors.

What a marriage.
