Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi who captained Nigeria’s Dream Team to the just-concluded Rio Olympics games is still in awe of the squad’s achievement. Nigeria’s football team claimed the nation’s first medal since 2008 at the sporting event after defeating Honduras in the third place match on Saturday. However, the excitement the victory has brought will not wear off quickly from the 29 year-old.
“When I woke up in my hotel room on Sunday morning, I opened my eyes to see my Olympic bronze medal lying there beside me. It just hammered home to me what I had achieved with the rest of my Nigeria team-mates the day before. We beat Honduras 3-2 to get the bronze and secure Nigeria's first Olympics medal in any sport since 2008.
All of us went into the game knowing this and it put extra pressure on the squad to perform.
The team actually played very well for the most part. We controlled the game, I created three goals to put us 3-0 up and it was all very comfortable. But we conceded two late on and all of a sudden it looked like everything was going downhill. They made us sweat a bit and we were relieved to come out victorious.
I was obviously very clear before travelling to Brazil that my target was the gold medal.  But to get the bronze is still an amazing achievement.  There was a celebration at the hotel afterwards, we were all jumping around. Everyone was so excited.
But we managed to get everyone to sit down together and have a team meal. After everything we have been through, it was great to have something to show for it and we all thanked each other. I went to sleep last night with my medal beside me; I couldn't and didn't want to let it out of my sight.
It really is a dream come true for me, for my family, my two little angels - my twin baby girls - my wonderful girlfriend, who has supported me all the way.
I might take the medal to the Chelsea training ground to show to the other players - I hope I don't make them jealous though! But first off all I want to celebrate with my family, put it around my daughters' neck, take pictures and make sure they get to see what daddy achieved.
This experience has given me the hunger to do it again at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. I will be only 33 then and my game will still be at a high level.
I enjoyed every minute of being in Brazil and I have been talking to the other guys about playing in another Olympics. I'm already looking forward to it and the countdown is on!
It's also provided me with a nice lift as I return to Chelsea. I will go back to see the manager [Antonio Conte] and see what his plans are for me. I want to get back into training and prove myself. I want to play and help the team to win games.

I know it will be difficult because I have missed most of pre-season and the coach has a new way of playing. But it is a positive thing for me that I have been playing well out here in Brazil and I'm in good shape.
I will need a few days off first because this tournament has been so draining. I arrive back in London on Wednesday morning and the game against Burnley on Saturday will come too early to feature in.
The plan is to have a little break, which is why the timing couldn't be better as the season stops for two weeks for international fixtures after the Burnley game anyway. It will give me plenty of time to enjoy my bronze medal and reflect on what has been a magical few weeks in my football career.

Photo published for Chelsea’s Mikel denies donating $30,000 to Nigeria Olympic squad

Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi has rubbished reports which gained traction today that he gave $30,000 dollars to his teammates in the U-23 football team. The Chelsea player who was recently made captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics debunked the claim at the team’s camp at the Hyatt Place in Atlanta, USA.

“I was first told of this unfortunate story by a friend who called me from Nigeria. I thought he was joking until he sent me the link. “I don’t know the source of this story which to me is all out to divide us as a team. I would have thought that stories that should be coming out in the media are stories that will unite the team instead of dividing us. Our target in Rio is to excel, but if they continue like this, then I wonder how we can be united.”

He added “Tell me the players who are in this team that are so hungry that will be looking up to me for survival? Is it (William) Ekong, (Oghenekaro) Etebo, (Shehu) Abdulahi, (Daniel) Akpeyi, (Kingsley) Madu, (Okechukwu) Azubuike or (Stanley) Amuzie, who are my team mates in the Super Eagles, that I will be donating to, or other players who are plying their trade abroad and are doing well for themselves? To me, this is just mere distraction that won’t help this team going into a major tournament like the Olympics.” He said

Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi has been named captain of Team Nigeria for the forthcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro scheduled to hold from August 5 to 21. He will be assisted by table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike.
The duo were chosen due to ‘their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assignments.’
“Mikel is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and we believe he will be a role model to the upcoming athletes while Funke Oshonaike is experienced and is one of the oldest athletes in the team. We believe that their combined efforts will bring goodwill to Team Nigeria and project the county’s image positively to the world.” The Sports ministry said in a statement.

Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi has spoken about his future at Chelsea. The Nigeria international who is out of contract next year stated that he has to be guaranteed a spot in the first team if he is to remain at Stamford Bridge. Mikel who featured for the blues twice last season has enjoyed regular playing chances under interim manager, Guus Hiddink.

He told Goal.com, 'I have one more season with Chelsea but I know when this season ends, we will definitely sit down and try to sort out whatever needs to be sorted out. 'If it means me leaving, fine. If it means me staying, then I have to play because one thing I don't want to do is to sit on the bench like I did before.'

CSKA Moscow winger, Ahmed Musa has described his appointment as Super Eagles captain by former coach Sunday Oliseh as a mixup. He added that the armband should have been handed to Mikel Obi who happens to be the team's longest serving player.

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Samson Siasia today named the Chelsea midfielder as the captain of the team after informing both players about his decision on Wednesday night. Musa will now be his assistant.

“Mikel is the oldest serving player in the team and it is the right thing for him to have the armband. This is just to correct what was done in the past.

“The most important thing for us right now is to concentrate on the two games in front of us and make sure that we beat Egypt and qualify for the African Nations Cup.” Musa said.

"I thank coach Siasia for giving me the chance to lead the team. I know exactly what he demands and I promise not to let him down." 28 year-old Mikel vowed. Meanwhile he will be presented with a special Nigeria Pitch Award on Friday, for the highest number of caps in the Super Eagles' camp.

Who saw Chelsea’s game today? I didn't but the people who did have never stopped recounting Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi' sterling performance. They said he shone brightly and singlehandedly took control of the midfield. I took a stroll down Twitter lane, brethren, the encomiums being showered on the Nigerian international are enough to last a lifetime. He earned it...

It doesn't matter if he didn't register his name in the scoresheet or he has netted less than 10 goals for the Blues in his entire career, the most important thing is that he put up a sparkling display and the world stood still for him.
He sent so much shock waves down the spines of football fans around the globe that some even called for a statue to be erected in his honour at Stamford Bridge. The last time I saw Chelsea fans that elated was when they lifted the EPL trophy last season.

Did I forget to add that a #MikelMania hashtag was created in his honour and he has also been dubbed Africa's Zinedine Zidane.

"We have to keep winning games. We need to get back to where we are supposed to be. If we keep performing, we will climb." The 28 year-old stated in a post-match interview.

Mikel Obi would love to replicate this performance and even improve on it.... but trust me the spirit is willing...

On a serious note, wishing him more exploits for club and nation.

Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi has revealed that the dressing room atmosphere has improved since their former manager, Jose Mourinho's exit from the club.
The Portuguese was dismissed by the club few weeks ago following a poor run of form which saw the champions lose 9 of their 16 Premier League matches.

“It was a collective thing the players and the manager were not performing. Jose Mourinho led the blues to title glory last season but left the Bridge with the club 16th in the league.
“We have moved on from that and the atmosphere has improved since the change of manager”.

3 ex and current Nigeria internationals; Mikel Obi, Kanu Nwankwo and Austin Okocha have been named in the top 10 African Richest Footballers list.

The study was conducted and published by French publication, Footendirect. I really don't believe Okocha and Kanu are richer than Mikel. What is however difficult to ascertain is if the list was drawn up before or after Kanu’s recent setback.

Remember the ex Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi complained about this same issue about 3/4 months ago. Is it that Mikel Obi doesn't want to have anything to do with the national team anymore? Even if he doesn't, there are procedures involved in hanging one's boot for the country.

The newly appointed Super Eagles manager, Sunday Oliseh has complained of being snubbed by the Chelsea midfielder. According to the ex Nigerian player, Mikel was not included in the 18-man squad of foreign-based players invited for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania in Der es Salaam on September 5 because he has remained incommunicado.

"I have not spoken to Mikel up till now. I have contacted him on several occasions with no reply. I sent him an sms, no reply. I went to London, he plays in same club with Victor Moses, Victor came to the meeting, we spoke, he did not.

"Every player we have invited, we have spoken to. No player is special, every player is the same. We will not win games with just one player, but with 11 players."
Oliseh explained.

John Mikel Obi has disclosed that he is happy at the Stamford Bridge and will see out his contract with the club despite heavy link with other clubs. The 28 year-old midfielder who has two years left on his contract have been tipped for a move from Chelsea over lack of playing time.
Mikel described the club as his family and also claimed that he has assurances from the manager to remain with the club.

"I have two years left on my contract here and want to see them out. I am happy here and we will see what happens. I do want to stay, the manager wants me to stay so I don't have any issues," Mikel told London Evening Standard.

"The manager has told me he wants me to stay. He said that and I'm pretty happy to stay.
"This is going to be my tenth season at the club, next year it will be my 11th. I have been here so long due to the contracts I have signed and I like to be somewhere where I have developed friendships. This is like my family now. Every time I come to work it's like coming in to see my family. I know the whole place, the staff, it is going to be a hard place to leave when my contract runs out and then we will see what happens," he concluded.

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi has complained of being snubbed by the team's midfielder, Mikel Obi.

Speaking recently with NationSport, the national team handler said he heard about the Chelsea player's  injury and had put a call across to him to know his state of health. He was however shocked that his calls were not picked and returned and he didn't reply his text messages either.

"When I heard that Mikel was injured I tried severally to get him on phone to ask after his health but surprisingly he did not pick the calls. I sent text messages too but up till now that I speak with you he hasn't called back or sent me text.

"This is unlike him anyway and it doesn't mean that I won't try to call him again. Since he is a member of the team, my duty is to call every member of the team to know their well-being and condition.  I also believe that he will call me since we have the national business to do together."

He added that the case is not with Stoke City player, Osaze Odemwingie who had a surgery September last year and just resumed to his club.

"I have been in constant touch with Osaze since he had his surgery and I am happy he is back on the pitch playing again. I spoke with him again three days ago. I have been calling all the members of this team and I can assure you that they are all ready for the task ahead." He affirmed.

Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel has said that it will be strange to play against former teammate, Frank Lampard when the two sides meet.

Chelsea/Super Eagles star Mikel Obi has been named the English Premier League's African Player of the Month of December by organizers of the New African Soccer Awards.

Mikel piped out West Ham's Cameroonian Alex Song and Southampton striker, Senegalese Sadio Mane to win the gong.

"as always, it was a difficult choice, but a lot of factors came into consideration before we selected Mikel". Awards director, Tunde Adelakun said .

He continued, "Mikel has endured a difficult start to the season, falling down the pecking order in a star-studded Chelsea team that is riding high in the Premier League. After all, we all know that no one likes changing a winning team. However, the spirit of professionalism which he displayed in waiting for his chance, and taking it well with some solid performances in a difficult month, tipped the award his way this month,"

Adelakun commended the level of the African performance in the English Premier League this season so far, stating that "the Africans have been a real credit to the continent, and when we watch them in the League, it is with pride'.

The statement also added that the New African Soccer Awards has been merged with the Africans Abroad Recognised (AAR) Charter, which seeks to recognise the exploits of Africans in Diaspora in all walks of life.
